Potato producers say the harvest this year is of a medium size for a normal year. Petru Iliev, chairman of the Association of Potato Producers, has told IPN that about 120,000 tonnes of potatoes have been gathered. The yield is by 30% larger than last year, which was a very dry one.

“We collected 25 to 35 tonnes per hectare. The quality of potatoes is neither very good nor bad. The potato prices have been stable on the market for several years, but may decrease slightly, not yet in stores, where they add the price of packing,” said Petru Iliev.

He also said that the largest part of the potatoes this year will be sold on the home market, but some of the producers received export orders, especially from Russia. As to the import of potatoes, they usually bring into Moldova only potatoes for sowing. The internal demand is satisfied from internal production.
