Potato producers anticipate that the potato harvest this year will be by at least 30% higher than last year. Petru Iliev, chairman of the Association of Potato Producers, has told IPN that the yield in parts will be by even 50% higher.

According to Petru Iliev, the latest rain is beneficial to potatoes. The not very high temperatures also favor the growing of potatoes. The pests do not harm the crops much now.

Petru Iliev also said that most of the new potatoes that are sold now at the market were grown in Moldova, but they started to be import potatoes from Romania. He believes that the importers declare lower prices at the customs as the potatoes in Romania are sold at the same price as in Moldova.

Potatoes have been cultivated this year on an area of about 20,000 hectares. The harvest is projected to total 300,000-400,0000 tonnes.
