The post of children’s ombudsman must not be excluded as Moldova faces too many problems in this field, a number of MPs said when discussing a bill concerning the people’s ombudsman. The bill proposes that the people’s ombudsman should be assisted by two deputies, one of whom should be specialized in child rights protection, IPN reports.
In the discussions held by the commission on human rights and interethnic relations, Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici said that Moldova faces problems in ensuring the observance of the human rights and thus the official dealing with this area should not have the status of deputy only.
“We speak about the children with disabilities, children who were abandoned and who were removed from residential institutions and taken back to their families. There are a multitude of such cases. I will insist and promote all the amendments so that the conception is changed,” stated Liliana Palihovici.
She also said that despite the different opinions concerning the work of the current ombudsman, this post must not be excluded. On the contrary, the mechanism for monitoring the ombudsman’s activity must be strengthened.
MP Raisa Apolschii said the post of children’s ombudsman is necessary as the children are the most vulnerable now that Moldova is affected by migration.
At the beginning of September, the Government approved a bill that changes the name of the parliamentary ombudsman into the people’s ombudsman. The bill stipulates the rules for holding the contest to select candidates and the appointment procedure.
