A portion of 90 kilometers of the Chisinau-Balti national road was reopened after rehabilitation. The works were financed with loans taken out from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (about €15m) and the European Investment Bank (€14.5 m). The European Commission offered Moldova a grant of €24 million, IPN reports.

According to a communiquéé from the Government, after visiting a number of road sectors, Prime Minster Iurie Leanca said that the changes are visible and finally Moldova has European roads. “I had the occasion of comparing repaired portions of the road from Chisinau to Balti with those that will be reconstructed next year. The difference is dramatic. We learned lessons after implementing this project, which we will take into account in the future,” Iurie Leanca said in the inauguration of the repaired road.

Attending the event, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said the project to repair the Chisinau-Balti national road forms part of a wide project to rehabilitate about 700 km of roads in Moldova with the support of foreign donors, including the European Commission.
