Population of Moldova decreases

During the last ten years, Moldova’s population has declined by over 300,000. According to the data of the population and housing census taken in May 2014, which were presented in a news conference on March 31, Moldova’s population is slightly lower than 3 million, IPN reports.

The census counted a population of 2 804 80. It is estimated that 193 434 people weren’t covered by the census. Thus, the total population is of 2 998 235.

In the municipality of Chisinau, the census coverage rate was of 59%, as opposed to the national rate of 91%.

It was determined that the population of Chisinau municipality is of 532 513, with 339 079 people being covered by the census. For comparison, in 2004 the population of the municipality was of 589 445.

The districts and municipalities with a population of over 100,000 remained the same as in 2004. These are Chisinau, Balti, ATU Gagauzia, Cahul, Hancesti, Orhei, and Ungheni. The number of districts with a population lower than 50,000 increased from six to nine. Basarabeasca continues to have the lowest number of inhabitants.

In 2014, 18 towns had a population of 10,000 to 20,000. In 2004, this figure stood at 22.

Director general of the National Bureau of Statistics Vitalie Valcov said the census covered the Moldovan citizens, foreigners who live in Moldova and stateless persons.
