The PAS’ decline in polls is a normal phenomenon given the severe crises faced by the Republic of Moldova, said political commentators, noting the poll conducted by CBS-Research shows a real picture of the realities as the people are dissatisfied with the government. According to experts, the poll does not present the preferences of the diaspora that is usually pro-European, IPN reports.

According to CBS-Research’s survey, 80% of the Moldovans consider they live worse than two years ago. Asked to respond how the people live in the Republic of Moldova compared with 2020, 41.5% of those polled said they live much worse, while 38.6% said they live worse. Only slightly over 13% of the respondents consider the Moldovans live better.

“The poll results are normal in the current conditions. PAS assumed governance not for political advantages, but for identifying the best solutions for the citizens, for improving wellbeing. But we are going through a difficult period, through subsequent crises we didn’t expect. These are international crisis and this probably caused the perception that the government is responsible,” PAS MP Marcela Adam stated in the program “Freedom” on TV8 channel.

For their part, representatives of the extraparliamentary opposition said the mistaken actions of the government only fuel the popularity of the forces of the left among the people and endanger the country’s European course.

“Imagine the euphoria in the Socialist and Șorist camps, those who are in Parliament and who make victims of themselves as a result of the latest events. This is our concern, of those who have struggled since 2015 for these criminal groups not to enter Parliament. What polls show now represents a serious danger to the pro-European course. We see that the party of the criminal Șor grows three times. We see Tauber enjoying popularity. This is what concerns us,” said the representative of PPPDA Inga Grigoriu.

Political commentators said the downward rating of PAS was anticipated as the government should have fulfilled at least a part of the electoral promises.

“It would have been strange if PAS’s rating had grown. Currently, persons from among the decided voters who supported PAS migrated to the undecided voters. Those who expected miracles are surely disappointed. But the people are always right, including when they are disappointed. Now PAS should realize why this is happening and which of the government’s commitments weren’t fulfilled,” said Viorel Cibotaru.

“It was clear that PAS will follow a negative trend. In elections, PAS exceeded the natural pool. The 50% do not represent the natural electoral pool of PAS. Furthermore, the diaspora is not taken into account. But PAS should have anticipated the problems. What we see now is an objective picture. Governance could have been more efficient. The team could have been better and the activity in Parliament could have been more prodigious,” stated Ion Tăbârță.

The survey was conducted by CBS-Research, being commissioned by the Institute for Political Science and International Relations “Ioan I.C. Brătianu” of the Romanian Academy in partnership with the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives “Viitorul” of Chisinau. It was carried out during January 24 – February 5 and covered a sample of 1,134 persons, having a margin of sampling error of +-3%.
