The Moldovan authorities passed the test on May 9 and provocations and dissentions between demonstrators were avoided, but it is now important for society to see that all those who break the law are penalized, said geopolitics expert Angela Gramadă. For his part, the head of Watchdog community Valeriu Pașa noted the Moldovans haven’t yet realized that the ribbon of Saint George is a false and dangerous symbol imported from the Russian Federation, IPN reports.

Representatives of civil society said that most of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova do not agree with the legal provisions that impose bans and the Moldovan authorities’ decision to ban the symbols of Russian military aggression was explained to the citizens insufficiently.

“One cannot swiftly remove something that had been ostentatiously promoted and inserted in the collective mentality since 2007. We published the results of an opinion poll showing that only 30% of the citizens of the Republic of Moldova support the authorities’ decision to ban this ribbon. 51% are against this decision. Half of the Republic of Moldova’s population does not understand why the ribbon of Saint George, in the way in which it is promoted, is a false symbol. It is a symbol that now glorifies the war and the shelling of civilian cites. It is not a symbol of peace,” the head of Watchdog community Valeriu Pașa stated in the program “Freedom with Dorin Galben” on TV8 channel.

Expert Angela Gramadă said the authorities prevented provocations and destabilization on May 9 and this is an accomplishment. To transmit the message that everyone is equal before the law, the politicians who disobeyed the law and wore the ribbon of Saint George should be fined.

“The demonstrations went smoothly even if some of the politicians wanted more attention not only from the public in the Republic of Moldova, but also from the Russian Federation. One of the reasons for which they urged to violate the national legislation was to generate provocations, tensions. The second part of the test for the authorities follows – the punishing of those who didn’t obey the law. We must see that the high-ranking officials who broke the law are penalized alongside the ordinary citizens,” said geopolitics expert Angela Grămadă.

According to the General Police Inspectorate, ten persons holding public posts broke the law on May 9 as they wore the banned ribbon of Saint George. In Comrat, there were identified 11 deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia who disobeyed the relevant legal provisions.
