Political party rushes prosecutors to shed light on ‘Cubreacov files’

The European Action Movement (MAE) urges on the Moldovan Prosecutor General to complete the so-called ‘Cubreacov files’ and make the findings known to the general public. The leader of the Movement, Anatol Petrencu told a news conference today that the reason for making such a request is that the vice-president of MAE Ion Neagu and Sergiu Burca, both former members of the Christian-Democrat Party (PPCD), have been threatened with liquidation on the chatroom of Flux, a PPCD-affiliated paper. “These concealed threats are nothing but an attempt to force the former member to keep their mouths shut. {...} We believe that those who made the threats are capable of acting them out”, said Anatol Petrencu. The MAE leader further stated that the Movement also urged the Prosecutor’s Office to reveal details in the case of the mayor of Drasliceni, Andrei Buzu, who was reportedly murdered a couple of weeks after his inauguration. “We didn’t manage to persuade anyone to run for mayor of that village. Obviously, there’s something fishy about the incident and we want to know what exactly”, Petrencu said. Early elections for mayor of Drasliceni are scheduled for this Sunday. Cubreacov disappeared on 21 March 2002 amid round-the-clock rallies staged by the Christian-Democrat People’s Party in downtown Chisinau. Two months later Cubreacov was found near a village on the Nistru. Whereas the Christian-Democrats and Cubreacov himself maintain that the Russian secret services were behind the abduction, the authorities in Tiraspol claimed they had evidence proving President Voronin’s involvement. Recently, to ex-members of PPCD, Ion Neagu and Sergiu Burca, alleged Cubreacov’s kidnapping was a popularity-bolstering move by PPCD.
