The recent political crisis faced by Moldova was resolved in an exemplary way, considers political analyst Igor Botan. According to him, the party leaders stepped aside in order to allow their colleagues to take their place. The statements were made in the public debate “Lessons learned and lessons to be learned. Overcoming and prevention of political crises: role of the political class and society - 2” that was staged by IPN News Agency.
Igor Botan believes that such crises allow testing the durability of the state institutions, the quality of civil society and the mass media. Nobody should be afraid of these processes, but the lessons given by the crises should be learned.
“It is important how the crisis was resolved, probably in a European manner. The leaders reached the conclusion that they should step aside and allow their colleagues to take their place. These new persons are competent and you are proud when you hear them speaking,” said the analyst.
Igor Botan voiced hope that the found solution is a durable one. He considers that the crisis was overcome owing to the foreign factor and the pressure exerted by the opposition. “I think that the fear for the opposition’s revenge was one of the decisive factors that led to the resolving of the crisis,” he stated.
According to Igor Botan, the early elections would have lead to the suspension of the European integration course and this would have been dramatic. He believes that the sociological researches played an important role as they helped the political players understand the reality by their messages.
The analyst said the Moldovan society is fragmented and continues to fragment further. That’s why the country is doomed to have coalition governments for a long time on. There should be identified mechanisms for overcoming the political crises in the future.
The 20th public debate “Lessons learned and lessons to be learned. Overcoming and prevention of political crises: role of the political class and society - 2” of the series “Development of political culture by public debates” was organized with support from the German foundation “Hanns Siedel”.
