The Polish War Film Festival has opened in Chisinau. The event is organized by the Polish Embassy and is hosted by the Culture Center Odeon during September 11-17, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Polish War Film Festival is held in Chisinau for the first time to mark the 70th anniversary of the start of the World War II. Polish Ambassador Krzysztof Suprowicz said on Friday at the opening of the Festival that it will include films by the best Polish directors. The ambassador revealed that the audience will be able to see movies produced in two distinct historical periods: the first is the period between 1945-1989, with films that promote the propaganda of the People’s Republic of Poland, and the second period includes movies made after 1989, when Poland became a democracy. “I am sure you will sense the difference between the two points of view. Historians and politicians from different countries treat differently the negative consequences of the war. But I think that those events brought only sufferings to both the Poles and the Moldovans”, said the ambassador. Attending the opening, Moldovan Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said such events are also an occasion to reminisce about what the Moldovan people went through. “We had a government that tried to conceal the truth; this is an occasion for us to remember, with the help of our friends, what we’ve been through as well”, said Ghimpu, wishing the filmmakers to henceforth produce only movies about peace. The Festival started with the screening of an older movie, “Westerplatte”, made in 1967. While most screenings will be war films in the classic sense of the genre – “Westerplatte” (1967), “Hubal” (1973), “Where is the General?” (1964), “The Pianist” (2002) – there will also be a comedy “How I Started the Second World War” (1969) and a romance film “Colonel Kwiatkowski” (1995). The movies are screened in Polish with Russian translation, with start-time at 18:00. Entrance is free.
