Policemen are required to have a European behaviour, after the Government approval on April 19, on the ethical and deontological Code of Police that includes some stipulations from the European Code of Police Ethics.
According to the interior minister, Valentin Zubic, the document stipulates the intervention rights and limits of police, their behaviour during arrest or the imprisonment of a person, the recruitment principles etc. Also the Code stipulates the responsibility and control over police, inclusively by the civil society.
“The Code of police behaviour has been elaborated in the context of the European integration aspirations. By now, the policemen were guided by the internal order regulations of the Interior Ministry (MAI) that has many gaps and was not aligned with European norms. Being approved by the Government, the Code will impose a higher responsibility level of the police”, states the vice-minister of interior affairs.
Breaking the Code’s stipulations is punished by disciplinary, civil or penal responsibility, according to the legislation in force.
The ethical and deontological police code has been elaborated by the experts from MAI and the Council of Europe.
