Policeman faces 10 years for passive corruption

The chief of the police unit of Bilicenii Vechi district of Sangerei district was arrested by anticorruption officers on suspicion of passive corruption. According to preliminary inquiries, the police officer asked for money from an elderly woman villager for not holding her accountable for illegally selling alcoholic beverages, IPN reports.

According to press officer of the National Anticorruption Center Angela Starinschi, the policeman initially asked 5,000 lei from the woman, but then negotiated a sum of 1,500 lei. The police officer was arrested in the act of taking the money. He put up resistance and tried to escape, but was immobilized and put under arrest for 72 hours.

A criminal case was started against the policeman over passive corruption. The man faces up to 10 years behind bars.
