A police officer of the National Investigation Inspectorate was arrested one week after he was appointed to the post. He is suspected of asking €300 from a young man for helping him get rid of a criminal case started against him over illegal distribution of drugs, IPN reports.

According to a communiqué from the National Anticorruption Center, the police officer told the young man that he can influence the investigating officer to drop the charges or to close the criminal case started against him. The police officer was arrested in front of the Centru Police Inspectorate in the evening of February 17. He yielded up the €300 voluntarily.

The policeman faces up to ten years in jail for traffic of influence. He will also be banned from holding particular posts for a period of two to five years.
