After three years of trials, suspended police officer Ion Perju, who is accused of casing the death of Valeriu Boboc on the night of April 8, 2009, was acquitted by the Buiucani Court. Prosecutor Valeriu Mosneaga has told IPN that he will dispute the decision of the Court of Appeals.
According to the prosecutor, the court’s decision is unfounded. The prosecution presented sufficient arguments proving the guilt of Ion Perju. There were questioned witnesses who were nearby when Ion Perju hit Valeriu Boboc. There were presented the results of the examination of the pictures taken by video cameras from the Government’s Building that night. The examination was performed in the U.S.
Ion Perju is accused of excess of power and causing of serious bodily injuries that resulted in the death of a person. During the investigation, Perju was suspended from post and was banned from leaving the settlement.
For his part, Perju pleaded not guilty and said that his former colleagues from the Criminal Police are those who want to see him behind bars.
In April 2009, thousands of people took to the streets to protest against the results of the April 5 elections, considering them rigged. The protests degenerated into violence and the Parliament Building and the Presidential Palace were devastated. On the night of April 8, hundreds of protesters were arrested and ill-treated in police commissariats. Valeriu Boboc was found dead. Afterward, he was officially recognized as the victim of police ill-treatment.
