A number of 75,000 packets of cigarettes to the value of about 650,000 lei without documents of origin were confiscated by the police. The contraband cigarettes were to be sold on the EU market, IPN reports, quoting a communiqué from the General Police Inspectorate.
The cigarettes were found in a minibus during a routine check. There were two persons aged 35 and 40 from Chisinau municipality in the vehicle. The smugglers face three to ten years behind bars.
The police are taking steps to identify and hold accountable all those involved in the smuggling scheme.
