The border police seized 16,000 packs of cigarettes made in Moldova to the value of approximately 209,000 lei. On April 6, four citizens of Moldova were caught smuggling 32 parcels with cigarettes over the Prut near the state border, IPN reports.

The Border Police Service said the police stopped a car with two occupants not far from Criva. Besides contraband cigarettes, they also found a gun in the car. Not far from the place where the car was stopped, there were two persons on an inflatable boat on the Prut, where there were a number of parcels with cigarettes. The two refused to sail to the bank and the police had to fire warning shots to convince them.

The four men were residents of Hlina village of Briceni district aged between 19 and 34. They said they intended to smuggle the cigarettes into Romania so as to make a profit on them there. The vehicle, cigarettes and the boat were confiscated. The investigation is continued so as to identify other persons possibly involved in this case.
