Poet Grigore Vieru commemorated on 81st anniversary of his birth

Poet Grigore Vieru on February 14 would have turned 81. The anniversary was commemorated in his native village Pererata of Briceni district. A ‘poetry tower’ was inaugurated in the court of the Museum-House “Grigore Vieru” in the village on February 14, with the first International Poetry Festival “Grigore Vieru” being opened there,  IPN reports.

In the event, the visitors of the Museum-House laid flowers at Grigore Vieru’s bust. Also, a number of young people of the public association “Honor, Dignity and Motherland” recited poems and sang songs near the bard’s bust on the Alley of Classical Writers in the central park of Chisinau.

“Grigore Vieru is the poet who during the years of national turbulence managed to awaken the national conscience of all the Romanians, while his poems depicted the nicest values of the Romanian nation – the Romanian language, the Romanian nation, the mother.  We will commemorate him here every year because the poet’s work should never be forgotten,” said the association’s head Vlad Biletski.

On the same occasion, Prime Minister Pavel Filip and Minister of Culture Monica Babuc laid flowers at the poet’s bust in Chisinau. “I want to say that Grigore Vieru’s works are significant for the development of Moldova’s culture and for each citizen apart. It is our duty to keep the works the great bard left to us and to the future generations. Grigore Vieru is incontestably a voice of special expressivity in the landscape of the Romanian poetry,” stated the Premier.

Poet Grigore Vierul was born in Pererata, Briceni on February 14, 1935. A boulevard in Chisinau and a number of education institutions in the country were named Grigore Vieru. A bust of the poet was placed in Straseni town.
