Young activists, supporters of the Public Association “UNIREA - ODIP”, on January 18 staged an event to commemorate poet Grigore Vieru at his bust on the Alley of Classical Writers in Chisinau. The young people laid flowers, recited poems of the poet and sang songs on Vieru’s verses. The event was held on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of the bard’s death, IPN reports.
Vlad Biletski, chairman of “UNIREA – ODIP”, said that he identifies himself with Grigore Vieru because this was a great patriot who loved his nation and country and was a poet of the nation. “For me, he is a great patriot because he said: “Some dreamt of reaching the outer space, while I my whole life dreamt of crossing the Prut”. This is a very sincere and painful message, but it is a true one and it’s good that our nation gave birth to such poets of whom we are proud and whom we honor posthumously as well,” stated Vlad Biletski.
“Grigore Vieru left us evidence of his love for the nation. He loved his nation, his mother and each blade of grass and each insect. He gave us an example of life and this is what we commemorate him for today,” said activist Valentina Miron.
Roman Leanca, member of “UNIREA – ODIP”, said Grigore Vieru, with his poems, taught him a lesson. He believes it would be good to lay greater emphasis in schools on the promotion of the great national poets so as not to forget that Grigore Vieru was a great bard who felt himself a Romanian.
Grigore Vieru died in the hospital on January 18, 2009 following a road accident that occurred on January 16.
