The Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) should compel economic agents in charge of large constructions of any type, to ensure that space is available for a parking lot that would suffice for the estimate number of cars to be parked in front of the building, said Ion Gabura, Ciocana district head. Gabura believes that solely by collaborating with the private sector, the problem of parking spaces in the capital can be solved. “The situation is critical, the settlement of which cannot be delayed anymore. Tens of accidents are caused daily by vehicles improperly parked on pavements, posing impediments to the movements of other drivers as well as pedestrians”, stated the district head. Ion Gabura supports the mayoral decision to modify roads and to create so called “pocket type” parking spaces, arranged at 45 degrees to the aisle. According to the cited source, the project will be accomplished in maximum 2-3 months from the moment of approval by the CMC and does not require strenuous investments. Moreover, this is not a solution that can be implemented in all areas of the city, i.e. the centre of Chisinau. The Ciocana district head has submitted projects for the construction of 8 multi-level parking spaces. “The formula, in our opinion is optimal: the economic agents were to build parking spaces on territories offered free of charge by the municipality, in exchange for a share of 50% for the CMC. Unfortunately, these projects were never discussed in the Council”, mentioned Ion Gabura. The Centru district head, Petru Budurin, opposes the suggestions of his colleague, who says that pocket type parking spaces are not appropriate for the central area of the capital. “The proposal of the mayor is welcome. By adjusting the road kerb we can avoid traffic jams, especially in the older, historical part of the city. We forwarded several projects regarding this issue to the Public Transport General Division (DGTPCC)” Budurin said. Mayor Dorin Chirtoaca requested the leadership of the DGTPCC, during an operational meeting on July 9, to identify the streets in Chisinau where such procedures would be possible and those kerbs and pavements where pocket type parking spaces can be built, without posing an impediment to the movement of pedestrians. According to the mayor, vehicles should be arranged at a 45 degree angle in such parking lots.
