The Ministry of Justice informed the National Liberal Party (PNL) that the objective of Moldova’s union with Romania, which is stipulated in the party’s new statutes, may be unconstitutional. In a news conference on Thursday, PNL chairwoman Vitalia Pavlichenko said the Ministry’s argumentation is groundless and if the party’s new objective is not accepted, the PNL will appeal to the ECHR, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to Vitalia Pavlichenko, the new objective laid down in the statutes and program of the PNL after the party’s third congress of December 3, 2011 says the party will promote the imperative of reintegrating the Romanian nation by liquidating the legal consequences of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The PNL pleads for the peaceful and democratic unification of the two Romanian states, i.e. for Moldova’s union with Romania as the shortest way of getting rid of Russia’s influence and quickly becoming a member of the EU and NATO. The Ministry of Justice asked the Constitutional Court to interpret this objective based on Article 41 of the Constitution, which says that the parties and other sociopolitical organizations that, by their goals and activities, militate against political pluralism and the sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Moldova are unconstitutional. Vitalia Pavlichenko said that she does not agree with the Ministry of Justice’s argumentation as the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state that can decide by itself its present and future and that the national sovereignty belongs to the Moldovan people. “If the people of Moldova want to unite with Romania, they will show their sovereignty,” she said. She also said that the party hopes the High Court will examine this case very seriously. “After the Constitutional Court passes judgment, the PNL will expect an answer from the Ministry of Justice to see what decision it takes. If the new objective is not registered, we will sue the Ministry at the ECHR,” said Vitalia Pavlichenko. John Onoje, who recently became a member of the PNL, said the union objective is very important for Moldova as the country will be able to resolve all its social, political and security problems only through unification. The Constitutional Court is to pronounce on the constitutionality of the PNL’s objective in the near future.
