The National Liberal Party (PNL) and the War Veterans Association 1992 “Tiras-Tighina” issued a common statement by which they call upon the authorities to invite NATO troops in order to protect Moldova’s population from Russia’s intervention. In a news conference at IPN, the chairwoman of the PNL Vitalia Pavlichenko said the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is the only political-military bloc that can protect the Moldovan citizens.

The statement reads that in the context of the separatist conflict fueled by the Kremlin, Moldova’s administration is obliged, by the will of the Government, Parliament and the Presidential Office, to ask the NATO member states to consider the possibility of deploying troops on the left bank of the Prut so as to discourage Russia’s forces that are ready to continue the offensive towards the west, aiming to dismember post-Soviet states that chose to have a European destiny.

“Moldova demands recognizing its wish to become part of the European Union, which can be joined only by being a NATO member. Thus, Moldova can only welcome the presence of troops in Romania, which offered its national territory to the NATO for military bases,” stated Vitalia Pavlichenko.

The statement also says that the presence of NATO troops in Moldova is possible only based on a bipartite protocol valid for the period of the crisis in Ukraine, which would ensure the security of the Moldovan citizens, if the security of the Moldovan state is violated. This would lead to the dispelling of the myth that NATO is a dangerous bloc, at a time when Moldova’s status of neutrality is seriously violated, given the Russian presence on the left bank of the Nistru during over 20 years.

The PNL and “Tiras-Tighina” say that Moldova is a state recognized by UN as a sovereign and independent one. Thus, it can decide to withdraw from the CIS, to join the EU, to invite NATO troops and to unite with Romania. “In the current tragic times, when the people’s security must be ensured, we will see if our authorities can be blackmailed by the Russian special services. The PNL and “Tiras Tighina” call on the state administration to show dignity and responsibility before the people,” reads the statement.
