Moldova’s place is in the big European family and Slovakia’s support is very important for us, Prime Minister Dorin Recean said during a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Robert Fico. In Bratislava, the two officials discussed the Moldovan-Slovak agenda, the expansion of economic and investment relations between the two states, as well as the European path of the Republic of Moldova, IPN reports.
The Moldovan official said the example of Slovakia, which 20 years ago chose the future in a union of democratic countries, is a source of inspiration for the Republic of Moldova. After its integration into the European Union, Slovakia underwent a significant transformation: the economy grew by 80%, people’s wages doubled, hundreds of thousands of jobs were created, and poverty levels were halved. At the same time, the security provided by Slovakia’s accession to the EU and the euro area encouraged significant foreign direct investment.
“We see how, together with the accession to the European Union, Slovakia has made a huge leap forward. You have become more prosperous, more innovative, and stronger. This is also the priority of the Republic of Moldova. We have a plan for European Moldova and we continue the necessary reforms to ensure better living conditions for the citizens and to ensure peace and wellbeing. Moldova’s place is in the big European family and your support is very important for us,” stated Dorin Recean.
The Slovak official reaffirmed the full readiness to support the Republic of Moldova in its European integration path. He also reasserted Slovakia’s commitment to strengthening the bilateral partnership and supporting reforms. “I assure you that the Republic of Moldova will continue to be placed among the countries that will benefit from our support as a priority. There is no better solution than to be members of the European Union and we will share, at the pre-accession stage, all the experience we have,” said Robert Fico.
In Bratislava, Premier Recean had a meeting with the President of Slovakia Peter Pellegrini. „We are building a European state with strong institutions, which will provide safety and high-quality services to the citizens, and Slovakia remains a consistent supporter of our efforts. We see how Slovakia developed after accession and this shows that the European Union offers a series of perspectives to the member states, even if we have to work hard to achieve our goal,” said Dorin Recean.
The two officials also considered possibilities of increasing trade between the two states. The need to exchange experience in the field of public procurement and in the cybersecurity sector was emphasized.
“You can count on our full support in the European integration process and in the negotiation process. We are happy for the results you have already achieved. We know that you will have a referendum and we hope that the people of Moldova will make a correct decision,” said President Peter Pellegrini, being quoted in a press release of the Moldovan Government.
Dorin Recean also had a meeting with the Vice President of the National Council of the Slovak Republic Peter Ziga. The interlocutors underlined the importance of strengthening the bilateral dialogue at the legislative level, expanding the areas of cooperation and accelerating the European integration of the Republic of Moldova. Premier Recean stressed the Government’s interest in exchanging experience in the fields of agriculture and environment.
For his part, Peter Ziga expressed his hope that during the constitutional referendum of October 20, the citizens of the Republic of Moldova will demonstrate the country’s firm desire to join the European Union, noting that Slovakia will provide the necessary support in this process.
