Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that the Republic of Moldova is an independent and democratic state with free people, whose rights are respected and protected. These are the fundamental elements that are enshrined in the country’s Constitution, which 30 years ago was adopted in response to citizens’ aspirations to live in a sovereign country, in an independent country. The statement was made at the solemn sitting dedicated to the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, which is taking place on Monday in Parliament, IPN reports.

The official noted that today we perceive democracy as a way of life because only democracy can generate well-being in freedom. According to him, democracy also means the responsibility to develop and modernize our society, and this effort is a continuous one for the current generations and for the generations to come.

“The Constitution is a living document and has gone through a series of transformations, like our society did. The most recent achievement is the one for which the people who are now present in the hall fought – the restoration of the Romanian language in the Constitution. This recognition in fact represents not only an act of reaffirmation of the national identity, but also a sign of respect and appreciation for the linguistic diversity of the ethnic communities, which contribute to the cultural richness of our country,” stated Dorin Recean.

He also said that in connection with the anniversary, we must be realistic, admit that we are still fighting an intense struggle for the supremacy of the law in the Republic of Moldova and the joint effort of all branches of power in the state will ensure equality before the law of everyone.

According to Premier Recean, today’s anniversary also coincides with the important changes that society is going through now, through which the path of European integration is firmly built. “In the autumn of this year, we will all participate in an extremely important democratic exercise – the constitutional referendum for European Moldova, which will once and for all enshrine the will of the entire country to be part of the great European family. The prosperous future of a country is the sum of our common choices, of each of us,” said the official.

The solemn sitting was opened with the parade of the Guard of Honor and the playing of the state anthem. MPs, ministers, former heads of state Petru Lucinschi and Nicolae Timofti, as well as ex-MPs who took part in the meeting of July 29, 1994 are present in the hall. The event is also attended by senators from Romania, members of the Constitutional Court, the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Superior Council of Prosecutors, heads of state institutions and authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps accredited to Moldova and of the academic community.

The Day of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova is marked annually on July 29. The supreme law was adopted by Parliament on July 29, 1994 and took effect on August 27, 1994.
