The Prime Minister of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg Luc Frieden said that as a founding state of the European Union, Luxembourg wants to stand by the Republic of Moldova on its path to joining the great European family of democracies. During his meeting with Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean, the official said that Western Europe cannot live in peace and prosperity if there is instability in Eastern Europe and if social differences are wide. The two Premiers signed a joint declaration in support of Moldova’s accession to the European Union in Chisinau, IPN reports.
Premier Recean said that his counterpart’s visit confirms once again the close relationship of friendship and partnership between the Republic of Moldova and Luxembourg. “Although we are separated by a fairly long geographical distance, we share the same values and a common commitment to building a European future in peace and prosperity for our citizens,” the official told press conference.
According to him, Luxembourg is a founding state of the European Union and is a symbol of European unity. Also, Luxembourg has witnessed unprecedented development. “Luxembourg has been and remains a model of development for us – a small country that has yet fully benefited from its geographical location and the hard work of its citizens, becoming an important financial center of Europe. The cooperation between our countries allows us to learn from the best practices in such areas as home affairs, finance, social protection and environmental protection,” said Dorin Recean.
For his part, Luc Frieden said that his visit to the Republic of Moldova is an important one. Following an invitation made by Prime Minister Recean, he came to express support for Moldova on its way to the European Union. And this is because, as Europeans and Luxembourgers, they believe that peace and prosperity on the European continent are essential.
“We cannot live in peace and prosperity in Western Europe if there is instability in the eastern part of Europe, if there is poverty, if there are great social differences. We have every interest in making sure that the fundamental principles – the rule of law, democracy, international law, human rights - for which the people fought when Independence was achieved, are not only stipulated in the Constitution, but are implemented every day,” stated the Luxembourgian official.
He noted that the EU provided peace, democracy, prosperity after World War II. But history divided Europe so that the Republic of Moldova became part of the Soviet Union. However, it then became an independent state. “Now we must and together we want to take the next step in this process. Moldova is part of this European family. We, the Luxembourgers, as founders of the EU, in your interest, ours, in our common interest, will support you on this path... And it takes a lot of work – laws, regulations. To ensure prosperity, democracy, you have to adapt the laws. The referendum that is to be held is very important for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova because it offers a free choice to the people,” said Luc Frieden.
