The Liberal Party suggests that the head of state should be elected by 51 votes. If the MPs fail to elect the President, in the third round there should be elected the candidate who polled most of the votes. If only one person runs in the third round, this candidate should be voted in if most of the lawmakers attending vote in favor, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Liberals’ proposal to amend the Constitution by referendum was discussed by a number of experts in the field on Thursday. The Liberal parliamentary group also proposed that Parliament should not be dissolved if it does not elect the head of state and the age from which a person can run for President should be 35, not 40. The Liberals consider that the President should be deprived of the right to designate candidates for the post of Premier so that this position is occupied by the candidate proposed by the parliamentary majority. The experts who took part in the consultations said the proposal is acceptable, but a consensus should be reached within the ruling alliance. Last week, the AEI announced that it intends to organize a constitutional referendum by the end of April in order to put to the vote the amendments needed to transform Moldova into an authentic parliamentary state and to simplify the procedure for electing the head of state.
