The Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) registered a bill providing for the annulment of the statute of limitations for the illegalities committed in April 2009. If the initiative is backed by Parliament, the persons to blame will face punishment regardless of the length of time that passed since those events.

The legislation provides that after five years of the commission of particular offenses, the culprits cannot be punished criminally. The proposed bill removes the statute of limitations for the crimes and abuses committed in April 2009 or related to those events.

In a press briefing, the leader of the PLDM Vlad Filat said the truth about those events must come out. “The strengthening of democracy in Moldova is strictly related to the punishment of those who committed abuses in April 2009,” he stated.

The bill will be examined, adopted, promulgated and published as a matter of urgency so that it takes effect by April 7, 2014 and those to blame for the degeneration of the peaceful protests of April 2009 can be held accountable.

On April 7, 2009, large-scale protests were mounted in central Chisinau against the results of the April 5 legislative elections. On the night of April 8, hundreds of protesters were arrested and ill-treated by the police.
