The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) pleads for the integration of the Republic of Moldova into the EU through reunification with Romania. This political option is stipulated in the Manifesto of the Tenth Extraordinary Congress of the PLDM, which was held on Sunday, July 2. As chairman of the party, the Congress elected ex-Premier Vlad Filat, who held this post for two times earlier, IPN reports.

In a statement, the PLDM says that its ‘absolute priorities’ are:

-  to continue the process of uniting the democratic, pro-European, pro-Romanian forces as the only alternative to the current government. The merger with the National Unity Party is only a first step in this regard;

- to seek to achieve the Reunification of the Republic of Moldova with Romania with complete devotion and dexterity so as to restore the historical truth and also as the fastest and most real path for bringing the Republic of Moldova home, into the European family;

- to promote authentic reforms to solve the multiple crises faced by the Republic of Moldova: demographical, political, economic, social, justice, etc.

Vlad Filat resigned as the leader of the PLDM in 2015, when a criminal case was started against him over alleged acts of corruption. Later, Filat was sentenced to seven years in jail. He considered the sentence was politically motivated and asked for a retrial of the case. The second time Filat resigned shortly after he was reelected in 2021, invoking personal reasons.
