The Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova put forward Maia Sandu for Prime Minister. The announcement was made by the party’s leader Vlad Filat in a news conference held in the evening of July 23, shortly after the head of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu told the press who is the candidate fielded by the Lib-Dems, IPN reports.
Vlad Filat said the name of the candidate was to be made public on July 24, simultaneously with the nominal composition of the Cabinet, but he decided to announce it earlier because some hurried, intentionally or not, to reveal this information.
The Liberal-Democratic leader said the party voted unanimously for fielding Maia Sandu. This candidate is to be discussed with the alliance partners and with the foreign partners. “Maia Sandu is to present her program and working group and to consult the alliance partners. A number of important meetings are now held within the alliance. The approach adopted by Maia Sandu is mature and responsible,” he stated.
Maia Sandu was born on May 24, 1972 in Risipeni village of Falesti district. She is not married. Between 1989 and 1994, she studied at the Academy of Economic Education of Moldova, the Faculty of Management. In 1995 – 1998, she studied international relations at the Public Administration Academy under the President of Moldova. In 2010, she graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In 2010 - 2012, Maia Sandu worked as adviser to the Executive Director of the World Bank Office in Washington, U.S. Since 2012, she has held the post of minister of education.
