RED Union Fenosa SA invites its clients to join in the Earth Hour, asking households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to take a stand against climate change. The event will take place on March 26 starting at 8.30PM (local time), Info-Prim Neo reports, quoting a communique from the electric power company. Earth Hour 2011 urges people to to go beyond the hour so as to stop environmental degradation and pledge their support for the planet. During the last decade, power consumption in Moldova increased considerable, though it is a small county. RED Union Fenosa SA promotes initiatives to protect the environment individually and in cooperation with the Global Compact Local Network and environmental NGOs. Vasile Gribincea, Union Fenosa official responsible for communication, stated for Info-Prim Neo that the event is aimed at making power consumers more responsible so that they use the strictly necessary amount of electricity daily. Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour. Last year, the event involved people from over 4,000 towns in 128 countries.
