The former president of the Democratic Party Vladimir Plahotniuc today took to Facebook to announce his resignation as Member of Parliament.
Vladimir Plahotniuc says he hopes that his decision to give up the legal immunity that comes with the MP seat will put an end to the “abuse and political pressure against the law enforcement bodies.” He went on to accuse the current government of politicizing institutions and of allowing Moscow to take control of key agencies in Moldova.
“I don’t need the immunity of a country now controlled by Moscow,” declared Plahotniuc, suggesting that over the last two years he and his family have been the target of politically-motivated prosecution by Russia.
Considering this, and given that “an MP seat has come to be of little value these days,” Plahotniuc says he will no longer be able to serve his Nisporeni constituents, as well.
“It wouldn’t be correct to them for me to keep this seat occupied as long as I’m not able to fulfill the duties that they invested in me, for reasons that do not depend on me. However, I will help them in a different way, perhaps even more effective, because I am indebted to them for life for the confidence they have placed in me,” declared Vlad Plahotniuc.
Shortly after his Democratic Party was ousted from government in June, Vladimir Plahotniuc resigned as its president and left the country fearing for his and his family’s safety.
