The Liberal Party (PL) will contend in the local elections set for October 20 this year. The decision was taken in an extensive meeting of the party’s National Council on July 14, which involved mayors and local elected officials, IPN reports.

According to a press release of the party, the PL decided to take part in the local elections so as to provide a healthy alternative to the pro-European and unionist voters different from the offer of the power – a bicolor ACUM-PSRM republic at central and local levels.

In a statement on the local elections adopted by the Council, the PL says it disapproves of and condemns the agreement for the local elections announced by ACUM and the PSRM, which transforms the election of mayors into a formality.

“This pact represents betrayal of the pro-European and unionist voters, while the candidates of the other parties will be automatically excluded from this electoral competition. ACUM and the PSRM want to establish a monopoly of the central power on the local power and annul from the start the competitive character of the elections.”

According to the PL, these actions are actually a form of usurping the local power and a violation of the principles of democratic elections that are based on integrity, fair competition and meritocracy.
