The Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities endorsed the Liberal Party’s bill with amendments to the law on the procedure for electing the President of Moldova. The Liberal Party proposes declaring the elections null and void if at least 61 MPs do not take part in the voting, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The commission’s head and author of the bill Victor Popa said that if the elections are invalidated, there must be set a new date of the presidential elections. “It is important that the ballots are cast. You can do whatever you want with these ballots later, even eat them,” Victor Popa said, addressing Communist MP Sergiu Sarbu, who did not back the bill.
According to the Liberal-Democrat MP Tudor Deliu, in this case it would have been logical for the commission to suggest a term within which the election date is to be announced. “Otherwise, the public meeting where the head of state is to be elected can be postponed endlessly,” said the MP.
The Communist lawmakers said they will not vote for this bill because it is aimed at postponing the election of the President. Anatolie Zagorodnyi said the ruling alliance changes again the rules of the game during the game. “The candidates can file applications and the election date was set. The aim of this bill is to put off the election of the head of state so that the alliance remains in power. We will not back this bill,” said the MP.
The bill was approved by seven voted for and four against.
