The Liberal Party (PL) returns to politics. Mihai Ghimpu said the party intensely prepares for the general local elections. The PL will also have a candidate for mayor general of the municipality of Chisinau. Mihai Ghimpu noted it is inacceptable for the municipality to be managed by pro-Russian forces for another four years, IPN reports.

The president of the Liberal Party said the party will run in next year’s local general elections. The local elections are the first stage of the path to power. Their stake is the capital city and they consider time has come for Chisinau to be taken over by pro-European forces.

“We resume work. It was a period of pandemic. The war then started. Now we start to prepare for local elections. If you do not contend in the local elections you should not run in parliamentary elections. Each party tests the forces in the local elections by fielding candidates for mayor, councilor. We will definitely have a candidate for the mayoralty of Chisinau. We had defended the capital city from pro-Russian forces for ten years. After they started to attack the PL, a party loved by Putin won the mayoralty of Chisinau. We do not want the same to happen in the next elections. All things start from the capital city,” Mihai Ghimpu stated in the program “Résumé with Ileana Pîrgaru” on RliveTV channel.

Mihai Ghimpu avoided saying who the PL’s candidate for mayor general of Chisinau will be, but leveled criticism both at the current mayor Ion Ceban and at the potential candidate of the PAS Andrei Spînu.

“What did Ceban do to remain? Sidewalks? The roads were made by Dorin Chirtoacă and Ceban realized that the sidewalks should also be made. These are surface things. But it goes to business here. The paving costs. No one puts questions yet. Or should Andrei Spînu run for the mayoralty after signing such a contract with Gazprom? We will not make public the name of our candidate. There is one more year left,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.

The general local elections are to be held in October – November 2023 as the last local elections were held on October 20, 2019 (first round) and on November 3, 2019 (runoff vote).
