The Liberal Party (PL) said the invalidation of the early mayoral elections in Chisinau is a rehearsal for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The scenario applied at the elections in Chisinau is a dangerous precedent that will be broadly used in the constituencies where the opponents of the Plahotniuc-Dodon duo will win. In a news conference on June 27, the party’s first deputy head Corina Fusu read a statement adopted by the Political Bureau of the Liberal Party in a meeting on June 26, IPN reports.
The statement says the invalidation of the elections took place with the direct participation of the senior state official, namely President Igor Dodon, Speaker of Parliament Andrian Candu and Prime Minister Pavel Filip. Therefore, the PL demands that the three should resign. The invalidation of the elections shows that the Democratic leader Vlad Plahotniuc orchestrates this show and wants to take control of the Chisinau City Hall.
The PL requests the Superior Council of Magistracy and the Disciplinary Board to examine the court judgements by which the elections were invalidated and to dismiss and hold accountable the involved judges. “The controversial decision to invalidate the elections created a rupture between the government and the citizens and between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova and the free movement and the Association Agreement are thus in danger,” reads the statement.
The Liberals demand to annul the mixed electoral system and to restore the proportional representation system. The PL warns the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe about the violation of the people’s sovereign right to choose their representatives on the local and central administration.
