The Parliament reform, even if it is adopted, will be applied not in relation to the next composition of the legislative body, but to the next legislature, said politicians invited to the talk show “Important” on TVC21 channel, IPN reports.

The spokesman for the Democratic Party (PDM) Vitalie Gamurari said no one can offer guarantees that 60% of the population will cast their ballots and will vote for this initiative. The reduction in the number of MPs from 101 to 61 could be applied to the next composition of the legislative body if early parliamentary elections are held.

Vice president of the Liberal Party (PL) Valeriu Munteanu said a Parliament with fewer than 101 MPs existed nowhere in Europe. The PDM proposed this populist initiative in order to blur the parliamentary elections. Moldova will be seriously penalized by the development partners and the PDM should assume the consequences if the people receive too many ballots in the elections. “The PDM suggested two matters that are popular with the people, but that it cannot implement  - “MP from your village”, but this will actually be an MP for three districts, and the recalling of MPs, but they know that this is not possible,” stated the politician.

On November 13, The Democratic Party proposed holding a referendum concomitantly with the parliamentary elections set for February 24, 2019. In the plebiscite, the people will pronounce on the proposal to reduce the number of MPs from 101 to 61 and also on the possibility of recalling MPs if the voters are not satisfied with the MPs’ work.
