Implementing reforms is the only solution for remedying the situation in Moldova, EU Ambassador to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola said in the talk show “Moldova live” on the public TV channel Moldova 1, IPN reports.

“The very inappropriate resignation of the National Bank governor caused the annulment of the mandate of the IMF representatives who came to Chisinau. The IMF needed guarantees, political stability. To obtain the signing of an agreement with the IMF, you need reforms. The IMF sometimes asks for very harsh reforms, but this mechanism worked everywhere in the world. I think it will work in your case too. So, do reforms, sign the agreement with the IMF and unlock external financing,” urged Pirkka Tapiola.

The diplomat also recommended working out a plan of action consisting of concrete steps to overcome the crisis. “The Moldovan authorities should make a real and sincere effort to find solutions. The reforms, investment climate, banking sector, the fight against corruption, broad inclusion policies, Gagauzia, Transnistria – these are the priorities. But the reforms should not be done in a hurry,” he said.

Pirkka Tapiola considers the Government of Moldova is able to identify solutions to overcome the crisis. “When there is will, solutions are found. I see no technical reason that would hinder the government from solving the problems. The fact that the political system is influenced by personal interests is another issue and this issue hampers the implementation of reforms and prevents the foreign investors from coming to Moldova,” he stated.

Speaking about the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU, the ambassador said the EU  attentively follows the situation in Moldova and called on the authorities  to become more involved in its implementation. “The Association Agreement is a good one. It simply must be implemented more rigorously,” said Pirkka Tapiola.
