The political class in Chisinau should take into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission about the modification of the electoral system, Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Pirkka Tapiola stated in the program “In Depth” on PRO TV Chisinau channel, IPN reports.
“There are two very important matters – the assistance offered by the Venice Commission, on the one hand, and the observations of the OSCE, on the other hand. All these opinions should be taken into account. But the political realities also play an important role,” said the EU diplomat.
Pirkka Tapiola made it clear that Moldova’s Parliament hurried to vote amendments to the Election Code. “Representatives of the Venice Commission will come to Chisinau on a fact-finding visit next week. After this, they will formula recommendations that will be made public later. I don’t think the experts will have recommendations formulated during their visit,” he stated.
Pirkka Tapiola suggested that the Moldovan politicians should reach an as broad political consensus as possible when it is about an important change, like that to the electoral legislation.
