The chairman of the Republican Public Association “Consumer Protection”, Piotr Guțul, accuses the senior state administration of corruption and says that they do not want a functional law on consumer protection.

In a press conference hosted by IPN, Piotr Guțul said that he sent countless requests to prime ministers, parliament speakers, heads of state and also to the Prosecutor’s Office and other inspection bodies, but didn’t receive answers that would help solve consumers’ problems.

The chairman of the Association “Consumer Protection” said that he doesn’t see any party that would really be on the side of consumers, “nobody wants a real consumer protection law”.

Piotr Guțul informed the consumers about a Supreme Court of Justice decision that obliged the company “Apă-Canal Chișinău” to install water meters free of charge at consumers’ homes. For the purpose, the consumers must file an application and ask for the conclusion of an individual contract for the provision of services and installation of water meters. He urged the consumers to do so.

Representatives of the Association said that there is insufficient control over food safety. According to them, in many stores in the capital city, expired food products are put on the shelf, especially where cooked food is sold. They also complained that the fruit and vegetables are not sorted. The spoiled fruit and vegetables are sold alongside the good ones. Consumers also complain that the government ignores their demands and doesn’t provide them with mechanisms through which they could defend their rights.
