The quantity of household waste that will be taken to the dump on Uzinelor St will be reduced by sorting and recycling glass, plastic, paper and aluminum. A pilot project to sort the solid household waste in the capital city was launched by the Chisinau City Hall.
The municipal cleanup company “Autosalubritate”, in partnership with SRL “ABS”, will sort solid waste in Chisinau. The project will be implemented by December 31, 2017.
Vasile Efros, head of the cleanup section of the General Public Amenities Division, has told IPN that when the project is completed, a report will be compiled to report the final costs and the initiative’s efficiency will be assessed.
“For example, 800 to 1,000 tonnes of waste are now stored at the dump on Uzinelor St. At the first stage of the pilot project, 100 tonnes of this quantity will be transported to the sorting station, while by the end of this year we aim to reach a quantity of 600 tonnes. The 100 tonnes will be taken to this station and will be processed. As a result, only 30 tonnes will be transported back to Uzinelor St,” stated Vasile Efros.
The functionary also said that from the viewpoint of environmental protection, this project is very important given that a smaller quantity of waste is stored. The capacity of the dump is limited and waste can be taken there during one more year. As the building of a new regional dump is the responsibility of the Government, the City Hall has to wait for this to be set up. Until then, they have to identify temporary solutions and the given pilot project is one of them.
The pilot project is implemented based on the March 14 decision of the Chisinau Municipal Council and the May 18 order of the mayor general of Chisinau.
