The Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Moldova and the European Public Prosecutor’s Office signed an agreement that will facilitate judicial cooperation in criminal matters and the exchange of information between the sides. The document envisions cooperation in the obtaining of evidence or the extradition of wanted persons and in the constitution of joint investigation teams. It also refers to the confiscation of criminal assets by sequestration or by freezing of assets, IPN reports.

The agreement was signed in Chisinau on Wednesday by the European chief prosecutor Laura Codruța Köves and acting prosecutor general Dumitru Robu. The officials discussed the progress made in investigating cases of corruption, including those of grand corruption, and the prospects of cooperation by exchanging information and experience and by operational cooperation in the investigation of cases that are within the remit of the institutions.

Dumitru Robu said that the investigation of cases of corruption, appropriation of state property and confiscation of criminal assets are the priorities of Moldova’s PGO. The Moldovan prosecutors are ready to further interact within joint investigations with foreign counterparts.

For her part, Laura Codruța Kövesi said that the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, within its power, will support the activities of the Prosecutor General’s Office of the Republic of Moldova.

Based on the agreement, the sides will cooperate more intensely to protect the financial interests of the European Union and the Republic of Moldova by investigation and prosecution measures.
