The Prosecutor General’s Office initiated three sets of criminal proceedings into the instances of wiretapping ordered during 2017-2019.

The PGO notes in a press release that the investigation comes in response to investigative reports which revealed that a number of opposition politicians, civil society members, journalists and other public persons had been wiretapped on thin suspicions of plotting mass disorders.

The PGO says that the wiretapping activities might have been carried out in breach of procedure, leading to privacy rights violations.

Given the constitutional principles regarding the guarantee of private life inviolability, which prohibit the collection, retention and arbitrary use of information on the privacy of individuals, the Prosecutor General's Office will decide on the actions of persons in charge as regards the criminal aspects.
