Reforms should have been done in the justice sector of the Republic of Moldova in the past, but there was no political will in this regard. Currently, reforms are mainly done in areas related to the economy, were the situation has improved, Head of the EU Delegation in Chisinau Peter Michalko stated in the program “Expertise hour” on Jurnal TV channel, IPN reports.
“These reforms could have been done in the past too, but there was no political will to include them in a strategy that would have led somewhere. I often saw changes made in the content of the adopted laws, but these didn’t reach the implementation stage. It is important to change to the better the daily reality,” said the EU Ambassador.
According to him, such a slow pace of doing reforms in the justice sector is not desired, especially for the ordinary people. The improvements in such areas as the independence of judges and practices applied in justice, including trials held behind closed doors, should be the subject of changes.
“As regards that part of the EU budget support that wasn’t released for the justice sector of Moldova, it was clearly connected with the lack of progress in the respective period, lack of reforms in justice, lack of changes that should have taken place, but didn’t,” stated Peter Michalko.
