The Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova Peter Michalko considers the Moldovan authorities should focus first of all on the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and then on political interests. Referring to the accusations made by the current government against a number of officials who formed part of the previous governments, Peter Michalko said that unity is needed at present, IPN reports.

“The attempt to use this situation for political purposes is out of place. They make many statements that are not based on any real assessment. The time is not opportune now. Unity and the actions of political factors are now needed so as to help society overcome the crisis. It is important and we see in many countries that the politicians are able to understand this. There are cases when these things do not happen. The country should overcome this crisis and the crisis must not become profound owing to the political attitudes,” Peter Michalko stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

The official noted that society in Moldova now mobilized massively and makes effort to help the authorities contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I saw the individual involvement of those who live here and support civil society in the solidarity activities, even small firms that do their best to obtain medical stuff, offer other forms of support. It is a great wave of solidarity that is felt in Europe and that I see and appreciate in the Republic of Moldova as well,” said Peter Michalko.

He also said that when the pandemic is overcome, the Republic of Moldova should return to the path of reforms so as to ensure the prosperity of its citizens.

“Reforms will be needed after this crisis too as the Republic of Moldova must be a better place for its citizens, who should enjoy prosperity and also fair justice. The relationship between the EU and the Republic of Moldova will continue to be very important and the fact that the objectives of the Eastern Partnership for the next period were communicated three weeks ago is appropriate. I think it is important that the five communicated objectives be those that will help us overcome the crisis and develop society,” stated Peter Michalko.
