The date of May 3, when it is observed World Press Freedom Day, is a good occasion for reminding the authorities of the necessity of fulfilling the commitments related to the freedom of the press and the journalists of the importance of professional ethics. The freedom of the press is a basic right that should be celebrated daily, Peter Michalko, the Head of the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova, said in a message launched on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, IPN report.

The ambassador noted that information as a public good is this year’s theme of the event and it highlights that journalism is a vital instrument that influences our health, basic rights, democracy and development.

“Today, in this unprecedented period of the COVID-19 pandemic, when disinformation and fake news spread as swiftly s the virus, the people will realize the value of journalism that respects the ethical norms. Before economic challenges and pressure, disinformation and interference with which the mass media meet all over the world, the European Union will remain a powerful ally, a defender and supporter of the independent press in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Peter Michalko.

He thanked the journalists, producers, researchers, cameramen and other media professionals for their work, for the fact that they correctly inform the public. “Owing to them, the citizens can trust that they will love in a free, safe and modern society,” said the EU official.
