“The case of the US$1 billion theft is one of the biggest concerns for me and also for the citizens of Moldova, who expect that those to blame will be punished and the money that can will be yet recovered,” EU Ambassador to Moldova Peter Michalko stated in a news conference, being quoted by IPN.

According to the ambassador, no one has been jailed in the bank fraud case, while the trials in this case are put off for tens of times and this can no way increase people’s confidence in justice.

In another development, Peter Michalko said the high number of infections with COVID-19 in Moldova is worrisome. According to him, the authorities, opinion leaders, high-ranking officials should give a real example of how the protective measures should be respected. “The authorities play a decisive role in this regard, in terms of correct wearing of masks, maintaining of social distancing as the pandemic cannot be overcome otherwise. Everyone bears responsibility, but those who take decisions bear the greatest responsibility,” stated the diplomat.

Peter Michalko also said that during the COVID- 19 crisis, the pace of exports from Moldova to the EU was kept or even raised. There were maintained all the conditions for exporters. The ambassador voiced hope that the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the EU will serve as an instrument for revitalizing the economy as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
