The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources (MERN) and the French Company „Tredi” JSC concluded on Friday, July 14, an agreement of providing technical support for destroying the stocks of banned pesticides, contaminated with persistent organic pollutants (POP) and electric condensers containing toxic elements. The agreement provides for the evacuation and destroying abroad of about 1,750 tones of old pesticide, stocked in 12 depots in 10 raions, as well as dismantling and packaging about 20,000 (1,060 tones) of condensers and their subsequent destroying at the enterprises of the Company „Tredi”. The Minister of Ecology and Natural resources, Constantin Mihailescu, said, on the occasion of concluding this contract, that the evacuation and destroying works of these refuses were preceded by a range of actions undertaken by the RM Government regarding the evaluation, re-packaging and stocking of old pesticides in raion centers and ensuring their preserving in appropriate conditions. Old pesticides collection will be finished till the end of 2006, at the moment being collected 2,000 tones of pesticides of those 3,000 estimated. The pesticides found in over 700 stocks of the territory of RM were concentrated in 32 stocks, one in every raion. Mihailescu ensured that the pesticides are preserved in appropriate conditions and do not endanger population’s health. According to the minister, the company „Tredi” provided to RM the most attractive offer of those 7 foreign companies participating in the tender. Thus it will be possible the destroying of a quantity of 600 extra tones than planned before, about 1,150 tones. Mihailescu showed his confidence that the Government and the French company will find solutions of destroying the remained quantity. The actions are included in the Project „Management and destroying of persistent organic pollutants”, financed by the Global Environment Fund (GEF) through the World Bank and RM Government. The value of this contract is of MDL 46.2 mln. The works are supported by the GEF Grant, RM state budget and the National Ecologic Fund. Evacuation and destroying activities, made by the Company „Tredi”, will be supervised by an international profile company and two local consultants of the Ministries of Industry and Infrastructure and Agriculture and Food Industry.
