The Moldovans holding Soviet-type passports will not be able to take part in elections. A relevant bill was adopted by Parliament in the final reading, by 51 votes in favor and 38 votes against, IPN reports.

The legislative initiative was put forward by the Liberal faction. The Liberals argued that 20 years after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence of Moldova, it is illegal to validate the identity document of a state that does not exist.

Communist MP Artur Reshetnikov said that this bill discriminates against the holders of Soviet-type passports, who are mainly elderly people.

In Moldova there are about 270,000 people who hold Soviet-type passports.
