The period of validity of the mandatory health insurance will be extended for a month and will be valid until January 31, 2024. The persons who paid a premium in fixed amount in 2023, regardless of the payment date, will benefit from the status of insured person until the end of January, Ion Dodon, director general of the National Health Insurance Company, stated in a news conference.

The extension of the period was proposed because many persons experienced difficulties in paying the mandatory health insurance premium during the first weeks of the new year as they went on vacation during the holidays and lost the status of insured person. “Moreover, last year we ascertained that there were situations when the persons needed medical assistance on the first days of the year, even on January 1, and were physically unable to pay the mandatory health insurance premium,” stated Ion Dodon.

He called on all the persons who intend to purchase a health policy individually to do this during the first months of the year, the best in January, so that the status of medically insured person is not interrupted. Among those who buy a health policy individually are representatives of such legal professions as lawyers, notaries, bailiffs, and mediators, individual entrepreneurs and other categories of people.

Those who purchase a health policy individually should pay the premium in fixed amount by March 31 or the person will have to pay the premium in full amount and also penalties for days of delay. Criminal accountability for delay in paying the insurance premium was excluded.

In 2023, the number of medically insured persons who paid premium in fixed amount increased to over 95,000 on November 30, up from approximately 62,000 in 2022.
