The performance of the national hospitals will be monitored and analyzed within a project implemented by the Center for Health Policies and Studies (PAS Center) with financing from the World Bank. The five-year project is aimed at assisting the Government in the process of reforming the health system.
Contacted by phone by IPN, PAS Center director Viorel Soltan said there was a global competition that involved about 700 NGOs. The PAS Center’s project was among the 70 winning projects.
“The monitoring will center on the performance of the health system, especially the hospital sector. Information will be obtained about the post-operation complications and we will see at what hospitals such complications are greater in number. We will also monitor the readmissions. If a person who was admitted to the hospital and received treatment returns shortly to the hospital with the same diagnosis, this will show that the medical institution is not efficient,” stated Viorel Soltan.
He also said that the monitoring data will be made public. Currently, the medical institutions do not have a system for monitoring the performance. The project initiated by PAS Center aims to develop this system and the medical institutions could later use it to improve performance. The first data could be made public this year already.
As a result of this project, to the value of US$730,000, the performance and efficiency of the public hospitals will increase by 20% and 25% respectively.
