The percentage of multiple pregnancies as a result of which women give birth to twins, triplets or more children has increased. Obstetrician-gynecologist Valentin Tarsu, head of the Consultative Section for Women of the Mother and Child Institute, said the treatment against infertility is one of the factors that determined this rise.
The doctor has told IPN that the drugs against infertility stimulate ovulation in women and the number of ovules that are then fertilized rises. Usually, the given treatment is intended for women younger than 40.
Valentin Tarsu said that a larger number of women now suffer form infertility. But this does not mean that there are more sterile persons. Earlier, the couples resigned themselves to not having children, but now they resort to treatment.
According to the doctor, the number of multiple pregnancies increases also as a result of in vitro sterilization that is done in the private hospitals of Moldova.
According to the National Bureau of Statistics, two cases of multiple pregnancies were recorded in 2010, five cases in 2011, and 11 cases in 2012. More than 400 twins were born last year.
